Tye Dye
An Advanced Play Therapy Study Group
Tye Dye is an annual retreat event with the intent of delving into important topics related to Play Therapy. The main goal of this group is to forward the practice of Play Therapy in day-to-day practice and to contribute to the play therapy literature. Those trained in any number of theoretical approaches to play therapy are welcome as the program is based on an integrative play therapy approach, and the Play Therapy Dimensions Model, to conceptualizing play therapy practice and decision-making. The Tye Dye study-group is limited to RMPTI alumni.
The Tye Dye study group follows a special format. It is not a series of workshops that people wander in and out of. It is peers presenting to peers and focuses on sharing of interventions, special issues, case examples and theory. It is a time to get together and to discuss topics and create new ideas. It is a time to stay together and to engage in games and fun.
We welcome all alumni for a global study group reunion.
11th Annual Tye Dye International Study Group 2026
Saturday October 24th to Monday October 26th 2026
It is time to commit to stop, reflect, and restore with Peers!
Topic: Stacking, Structures and Storying: Building Play Skills Using Lego Blocks and Ordinary Materials in Play Therapy
Colleagues from across the play therapy community gather for the 11th Annual Tye Dye International Study Group, a unique three-day professional retreat hosted by Rocky Mountain Play Therapy Institute. Designed as a peer-to-peer learning experience, this annual gathering brings together experienced play therapists and play therapy supervisors. The focus is on thought leadership with an aim to advance the field through meaningful dialogue, creativity, and reflection.
This year’s theme explores the therapeutic possibilities of Lego blocks, construction materials, and everyday objects in play therapy. Together, participants will examine how stacking, building, and storying can deepen children’s expression, strengthen therapeutic relationships, and expand play therapists’ clinical skills. Through discussion of case examples, literature, collaborative inquiry, and hands-on experiential learning, participants generate new ideas and contribute to the collective knowledge of the profession.
Tye Dye International Study Group is intentionally designed to foster connection. The same group remains together throughout the three-day retreat, creating space for authentic conversations, shared learning, and lasting professional relationships. The atmosphere is relaxed, engaging, and supportive, encouraging participants to think deeply, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another’s clinical wisdom.
The retreat also emphasizes therapist well-being. Yoga and mindful movement breaks are woven throughout the weekend, providing opportunities to pause, reflect, and recharge. An evening social activity is part of the plan and provides additional time to connect with colleagues in an informal way. The annual tie-dye tradition of actual “tye dying” of various materials occurs each year.
Participants leave refreshed, re-energized, and equipped with new perspectives and ideas to infuse into their work with children and families.
